As for what
follows: Dear respected listeners. We will be talking in this programme about
what should be recited over the sick. It is known O my respected listeners that
when a person becomes sick or when sickness becomes severe, a lot of people in
this situation start thinking about finding someone to make ruqyah[2]
for them in addition to seeking treatment. Many people think about finding
someone to do ruqyah and recite over him and many people neglect the fact that
the du’aa of the sick person for himself and reciting over himself has great
benefits and the advantages are magnificent because the du’aa of a person for
himself is a du’aa of someone in distress.
Tabaraani
relates in his book Ad-Du’aa that Aboo Bakr ibn ‘Abdillaah al-Muzanee visited a
person who was sick. The sick person asked him, ‘O Aboo Bakr, make du’aa for me!’
so he said, ‘Make du’aa for yourself: Allaah answers the one in distress when he
makes du’aa’. This means that we should pay attention to this that when a
person who is sick and makes du’aa in his time of need, trial and difficulty,
his du’aa is of the person who is in distress. Allaah said,
Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the
distressed one, when he calls Him, and Who removes the evil, and makes you
inheritors of the earth, generations after generations. Is there any ilah (god)
with Allah? Little is that you remember!
[Naml 27:62]
We should
give utmost attention O listeners to these authentic du’aa, learning them, memorizing
their words, meanings, implications and that we teach and spread it among the
people who are sick and needy hoping that Allaah will make it a means of
benefit for everyone in need.
Ruqaa is the
plural of ruqyah and it means to recite and blow over the sick person. There
are two types of ruqyah:
1.
Legislated
2.
Prohibited
The legislated
ruqyah consists of dhikr of Allaah, reciting Qur’aan and authentic du’aa
related from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.
The prohibited
ruqyah is not like that. It consists of talismans, magic (deceptive tricks), mentioning
the names of the shayaateen, unintelligible speech that these magicians and
liars use. They are prevalent even today.
The Sahaabah
asked the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم about ruqyah. He صلى الله عليه وسلم
said,
“Show me
your Ruqyah, there is no harm in ruqyah as long as it does not contain shirk.[3]
O noble
brothers, indeed sickness that befalls a person may be a source of good for him
from the angle that he will become closer to Allaah and his reliance upon
Allaah will become stronger - he will have fervent hope, be frequently turning
to Allaah, seeking help, assistance and asking Allaah. This will be a source of
good for him in terms of prostrating to Him, increasing his calling upon Allaah,
crying and turning to Allaah. It may be that some sick people when they are in
this state of sickness will have a soft, tender tranquil heart. He will humble
himself, be submissive and humble in front of Allaah which would not happen if
he were in good health. So his sickness will contain goodness for him and lead
to doors of rectification, uprightness and seeking help.
So two types
of goodness will be gathered in this affair:
1.
The goodness of a cure by
Allaah’s permission from the harm that afflicted him and
2.
The goodness of strengthening
his relationship with Allaah by turning to Him.
How many
people that Allaah granted success have come out of sickness guided, upright
and preserving obedience to Allaah?
In this
programme we will cover some of the ruqaa, O listeners, which come authentically
from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم ….
