Etiquettes with a Dying Person and
after Death[1]

1.
Moisten the lips to ease
the saying of Laa ilaaha illa Allaah.
2.
Remind him to say Laa
ilaaha illa Allaah.
3.
Close his eyes
4.
Only say good things around
him as the angels say aameen
5.
Make du’aa for him like the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم told Umm Salamah for Abee Salamah
اللهم اغْفِر لي ولَهُ، واعْقِبْني مِنْهُ عُقْبَة حَسَنَة
Allahummaghfir li wa lahu, wa a’aqibni
minhu `uqba hasanah
[O Allah, forgive me and him, and bestow
upon me a better future (give me a better substitute)
6.
Close his jaws while his
body is still warm so mouth is not left open for ghusl water or insects.
7.
Whilst body is still warm
make the joints flexible to facilitate ghusl and shrouding before it stiffens. Bend
the fingers, arms, legs and straighten them.
8.
Remove clothes gently.
9.
Cover the whole body with a
cloth.
10.
(Some say place a heavy
object on the stomach to prevent bloating but it is not authentic or
recommended to do).
11.
Hasten to prepare the
deceased as long as death is confirmed. (Abasa 80:21)
12.
Hasten in carrying the
janazah.
13.
Signs of Death:
a.
Medical signs:
i.
Breathing and heart stop
ii.
Brain dead (if the brain
cells have died it is permissible to stop life support machine)
b.
Signs that People of
knowledge have specified:
i.
Sinking of the temple
between the eye and ear.
ii.
Sideward inclination of the
nose
iii.
The hand seems separated
from the arm as if hanging by the skin
iv.
The feet seem separated
from the ankle as if loose
v.
The skin of the face is
loose
vi.
The jaws separate
vii.
Contraction of the
testicles
viii.
Disappearance of the
blackness of the eyes (strongest sign of death)
